GuyKat Shortlisted for Scaleup Company of the Year

GuyKat has been shortlisted for Scaleup Company of the Year... and why it matters to us

We are excited to be shortlisted for Scaleup Company of the Year at this year’s TechWM Awards.

We pour a lot into our people at GuyKat, so this recognition isn’t just about revenue curves or headcount graphs, it’s about the humans behind them.

At GuyKat, we believe great growth comes from great people. So we back ours with development, mentorship and everyday support. When we say we’re people-first, we mean it.

How we’ve scaled:

  • People-first growth: Since 2020, we’ve tripled our headcount without losing our culture. We have achieved this through smart recruitment and internal development. Every single employee has regular, dedicated 1-1s. These sessions aren’t status updates, they’re check-ins on wellbeing, progress, challenges, and aspirations. They’re about unlocking the potential of individuals who want to grow.

  • Putting our clients top of the list: We pair high client standards with real personal support. Last year, we exhibited at five international events, growing our visibility and reaching new markets. We have expanded our service offering with new partnerships including an AI-powered video creator, Colossyan.

  • A Graduate Scheme that builds future leaders: We recruit graduates not just for what they know, but for their potential. Over the course of 18 months, graduates rotate through teams to help them find the area where their talents shine brightest. Each graduate is paired with a dedicated mentor in each rotation, given 1-1 development sessions with senior leadership, and encouraged to set personal and professional goals. By the end of the programme, they don’t just ‘slot into a job’, they become integral to shaping the future of their chosen team. The result? A retention rate of over 90% and a new generation of rising stars.

  • Wellbeing you can feel: We’ve trained Mental Health First Aiders across the business so there’s always someone to talk to, no matter the challenge.

  • Community that works online and off: We host monthly socials designed for everyone, including film club, pub trips, chess competitions, sports day, badminton sessions, curry night and virtual quizzes. We have friendships that started here, and it's all naturally happening across the business.

  • Tools for better teamwork: We use DiSC personality profiling to help teams understand each other’s working styles and communicate more effectively.

The awards

For us, “scaleup” has never been shorthand for “grow at any cost”. It’s meant grow with intent, protecting what we do best, nurturing potential, and building a place where talented people can do the best! We’ve scaled consciously without losing what makes us "us" 💙 So best of luck to everyone nominated on Friday. There’s brilliant work happening across our region and whatever happens on the night we still feel lucky to be shortlisted.

Behind the Scenes at GuyKat: Meet the Team

At GuyKat, we believe a great workplace starts with great people.

That’s why we recently turned the camera on our team...

We asked a few (chaotic) questions. We got a lot of unexpected answers. And we captured a snapshot of what makes our culture so unique.

This is an insight into unscripted life at GuyKat. From spontaneous impressions to questionable mouse mats and terrible jingles, this video is a celebration of the personalities that power our business.

Whether you're curious about what it’s like to work here, considering applying, or just need a laugh, we think you’ll enjoy it.

👩‍🎓 Hannah Johnston👩‍🎓

What is your experience like on GuyKat’s Graduate Scheme?

From my first day, I felt like a valued member of the team at GuyKat. In my first few months, I have learnt so much thanks to everyone being so incredibly supportive and encouraging me to pursue my interests. There were so many options for what areas of the business I could do my rotations in, and I got a lot of guidance to help me make the right decisions. I believe leadership genuinely cares about what I want to learn and what I want to do at GuyKat.

What inspired you to apply for the Graduate Scheme at GuyKat?

There were three main reasons why I decided to apply for the Graduate Scheme at GuyKat. The first was because I was really excited by the opportunity to do rotations across professional services, content creation and business administration. I felt that this was a unique opportunity to get a really good understanding of the business as a whole, and figure out what I was passionate about and wanted to pursue a career in. The second reason was that I genuinely love learning and I was interested in moving into the tech industry. As GuyKat is an eLearning agency, it combines both learning and technology, so that sounded ideal! Then, the third main reason I applied for this job was because finding a job with a work environment where I would be happy, and where my professional growth would be nurtured, was really important to me. From reading the job advert and looking at GuyKat’s website, I got the impression that GuyKat had a really supportive culture, and that had a big influence over why I applied for this job. Now that I’m on the Graduate Scheme, I can confirm that my gut feelings of ‘I will learn a lot through this Graduate Scheme’ and ‘GuyKat’s culture seems pretty cool’ were 100% correct and I am very happy here.

What stood out to you about GuyKat?

Something that stood out to me about GuyKat was who their clients are. GuyKat works with some of the biggest brands in the world, and these clients have amazing things to say about GuyKat! The feedback we get from our clients is something that makes me really proud to work for GuyKat.

How did you find the application and interview process for the Graduate Scheme?

I thought the application process was smooth and professional. I got a phone call to let me know my written application was successful and that I was invited to have a brief 15-minute online interview with the CEO. I was initially quite nervous about being interviewed by the CEO, but Guy is really nice and it felt more like a conversation than an interview. I was then invited to an in-person interview at the GuyKat office in Birmingham, where Guy and two others interviewed me. Everyone was lovely and made me feel at ease (or as comfortable as you can be in an interview!). Overall, I had a positive experience.

What do you enjoy most about your current role at GuyKat?

I honestly love the people I work with at GuyKat. It is such a lovely place to work. Everyone genuinely seems to care about who I am and what I want to do. If I’m interested in something a colleague from a different team is working on, I can reach out to them and they are always so willing to show me what they are doing or get me involved in the work. I always feel I can ask any questions without being judged.

In what ways do you feel you’ve grown personally or professionally since joining GuyKat?

At GuyKat, there is no such thing as a ‘silly’ question and everyone is encouraged to voice their opinions. I’ve gained more confidence in asking for help, asking about colleagues' work and suggesting ideas. This has really helped my professional development since it has led to insightful conversations and opportunities for me to get involved with tasks across different teams. We also participated in DiSC sessions to learn more about our personalities and our colleagues. I was initially a little skeptical of these sessions, but they were fun and I feel like they helped me understand myself better and how I can improve communication and teamwork with my colleagues. Before joining GuyKat, I was unsure of the direction I wanted to take my career. However, since I started a few months ago, I feel much more confident about the path I want to take, thanks to the amazing support and guidance from leadership.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career at GuyKat or applying for the Graduate Scheme?

My honest advice would be to just be yourself. We have such a mix of different personalities here at GuyKat and I think your application is more likely to be successful if you are your authentic self. Put effort into writing your cover letter; think about why you want to work for GuyKat, why you want a place on this Graduate Scheme, and absolutely do not get ChatGPT to write it!
